Doctoral Students' Film Club

Doctoral Students' Film Club

This Thursday December 10 at 7:00 PM, the Culture Commission of the Association of Doctoral Students of the Jagiellonian University invites you to the latest edition of the Doctoral Students’ Discussion Film Club. This time, we will watch Roland Joffé’s film The Forgiven.

Can terror be an act of courage? Can repulsion turn into fascination? Is there more than one truth? Must every crime be punished? These questions will long torment pastor Desmond Tutu (Forest Whitaker), a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize who would head the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa. He is entrusted with convicting criminals and pardoning the innocent. Once he meets one of the most dangerous inmates, nothing will be clear-cut again. Pit Bloomfield (Eric Bana), who serves a life sentence for a race-motivated crime, tries to convince the clergyman of his truth and lures him into a dangerous game. In English with Polish subtitles. This description of the film comes from the distributor.

Our speaker will be Nadia Gubernat, a PhD candidate in political science at the Jagiellonian University’s Institute of Political Science and International Affairs, a graduate of the Faculty of International and Political Studies as well as Law and Administration at that university, and the recipient of stipends to study at the University of Warsaw and the University of Bologna as part of the MOST and Erasmus programs, respectively. In her didactic work and research, she deals with the history of political and legal doctrines as well as the contemporary history of international relations.

We ask all who are interested in participating in the event to create an account on the E-Kino Pod Baranami platform (if you have not yet done so). Please send a message to Filip Mazurczak (filip.mazurczak@doctoral.uj.edu.pl), the organizer of the Doctoral Students’ Film Discussion Club, containing the email address on which you have registered your account by Thursday at 6:00 PM at the latest.
