Invitation to the Doctoral Students' Film Club

Invitation to the Doctoral Students' Film Club

The Culture Commission of the Jagiellonian University's PhD Students’ Association invites you to the latest edition of the Doctoral Students’ Film Club, which will take place next Thursday April 15 at 6:00 PM. This time, we will watch The Assistant, a 2020 American film directed by Kitty Green.

Jane (Julia Garner, who won an Emmy for her work in Ozark) is a recent college graduate who dreams of making it big as a film producer. When she gets a gig as the assistant of a big shot in the entertainment industry, she is overwhelmed with joy. However, Jane does not yet know that instead of bringing her closer to her dreams her job will lead to her downfall. You need to know neither the basic assumptions of the courageous #MeToo movement nor the details of the Hollywood scandal concerning Harvey Weinstein in order to feel the breath of a man who exploits his position to deprive his victim of more than just her dreams on your skin. The Assistant is the story of a scandal that could occur anywhere!

Inspired by real events, The Assistant tells the story of a young and ambitious woman who must deal with an influential film producer, a man who holds the power to decide about her future in his hands. In a scrupulously analyzed and well-written story, director and screenwriter Kitty Green dissects one of the most serious problems of our times: What to do when a junior employee faces a deeply rooted network of abuse?

Emmy winner Julia Garner’s role is truly poignant. Although calm and quiet, her character shouts to each viewer, telling the story of power and its abuses.

The Assistant is an accusation in the name of all those who have ever experienced this problem but have lacked the courage of the heroines of the #MeToo movement.

The description of this film comes from the distributor.
