Fees for conducting the procedure for awarding a doctoral degree (participants of doctoral studies)

Fees for conducting the procedure for awarding a doctoral degree (participants of doctoral studies)

Pursuant to Art. 279 paragraph. 1 of the Act, Regulations introducing the Act - Law on Higher Education and Science (hereinafter: "reg. int."), doctoral studies commenced before the 2019/2020 academic year are conducted under the existing rules, but no longer than until December 31, 2023.

It should be noted that both in the case of expiration of the duration of doctoral studies (4 years or more in the case of extending the study period) and their termination on December 31, 2023, participants of doctoral studies will not be removed from the list of doctoral students by way of an administrative decision, and this will only result in the loss of the status of a participant of doctoral studies. Expiration of the duration of doctoral studies or termination of studies in a situation where a given person initiated the doctoral dissertation procedure during their studies or applied for the appointment of a supervisor does not directly affect the procedure of awarding the academic degree, as it is not inherently related to the status of a doctoral student, unlike the procedures in the case of education at the doctoral school.

In the case of doctoral dissertation procedure (old rules), pursuant to Art. 179 paragraph. 1 and sec. 4 of the reg. int., they are implemented according to the existing rules but if not completed until December 31, 2022 - canceled or closed, respectively. At the same time, it should be noted that in accordance with the currently processed draft act of 1 December 2021 amending the Act - Law on Higher Education and Science and the Act - Regulations introducing the Act - Law on Higher Education and Science, in the event of its adoption, the indicated date will be postponed to December 31, 2023.

It should be emphasized that the redemption or closure of the doctoral dissertation procedure does not constitute an obstacle to applying for the degree under the new procedure.

If a given person applies for a doctoral degree under the new rules, in accordance with §26 of Resolution No. 87 / IX / 2019 of the Jagiellonian University Senate of September 25, 2019, in the case of people who started their doctoral studies before the academic year 2019 / 2020, subject to submission of the doctoral dissertation and its approval by the supervisor and submission of an application for the appointment of an examination committee and doctoral committee by 31 December 2023 (for persons starting their studies in the 2018/2019 academic year - by 31 December 2024) no fees are charged for the conduct of the procedure. If the application is submitted after this date, a fee for conducting the procedure will be required.
