All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, United States 2023, dir. Laura Poitras.

Nan Goldin the activist and Nan Goldin the artist are inextricably tied together. Director Laura Poitras (who won an Oscar® for Citizenfour, which was screened at the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival in 2015) presents Goldin's life and work from her own perspective.

It also depicts creative protests organized by her unique protagonist. As an artist, Goldin left home at a young age and gained fame as a photographer thanks to (The Ballad of Sexual Dependency), a series of exhilarating, colorful, intimate pictures presenting the gay subculture, herself, her family, and her friends. Currently, she devotes all her energy to the activist group PAIN (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now), of which she is a founder, and which defends persons addicted to painkillers and battles against the drug’s producer, the Sackler family.

Through Purdue Pharma, the Sacklers have earned billions of dollars by selling OxyContin, leading to the opioid crisis in the United States. Goldin was prescribed this drug after knee surgery; she became immediately addicted. Until that point, she had known the Sacklers solely as philanthropists who sponsored leading museums that exhibited her art. Today, she leads a group struggling to hold accountable those responsible for this crisis, which has led to the deaths of half a million Americans. Their protests culminate in pro bono lawsuits by the best attorneys in the United States. The film's title refers to the opinions of psychiatrists about Goldin's sister Barbara, who committed suicide at a psychiatric hospital. One sentence from a report about her is repeated: she sees the future, all its beauty and bloodshed.
