W filmie Strefa interesów brytyjski reżyser Jonathan Glazer przygląda się domowej idylli w czasach nazistowskich Niemiec. Rudolf (Christian Friedel) wraz z żoną Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) oraz czwórką dzieci i psem mieszkają w przestronnym, pedantycznie czystym domu z wypielęgnowanym ogrodem i szklarnią. Celebrują rodzinne obiady, marzą o wakacjach w ukochanych Włoszech. W weekendy lubią popływać kajakami lub pospacerować po lesie z przyjaciółmi. Jednak zza ścian ich domu często dobiegają niepokojące odgłosy, a czasem rozpaczliwe krzyki, ponieważ Rudolf Höss jest komendantem obozu koncentracyjnego Auschwitz-Birkenau. 

Strefa interesów to porażające studium banalności zła, w którym nigdy nie jesteśmy świadkami ludobójstwa ani obozowej rzeczywistości. Wszystko, co brutalne, od czego chce się odwrócić wzrok, zostaje wypchnięte poza dom Rudolfa i Hedwig, hermetycznie zamknięte poza ich codziennym życiem. Rodzinną sielankę tylko od czasu do czasu zakłóca dym z pobliskich kominów obozu. Czy można urządzić sobie sterylny raj w cieniu cudzego piekła, tak aby jego ślady nie przeniknęły do świadomości i sumienia?

Film Jonathana Glazera, twórcy Under the Skin oraz kultowych teledysków Massive Attack i Radiohead, jest polską koprodukcją, za którą – po stronie polskiej – odpowiadała Ewa Puszczyńska, producentka Idy i Zimnej wojny. Strefa interesów to wybitna, w całości zrealizowana w Polsce, nowatorska reinterpretacja kina Zagłady, nagrodzona Grand Prix na festiwalu w Cannes oraz nominowana do Oscara w 5 kategoriach, w tym dla Najlepszego Filmu. Za muzykę odpowiada Mica Levi, a autorem zdjęć jest nominowany do Oscara Łukasz Żal (Zimna wojna, Ida). To głęboko wstrząsające, otwierające oczy dzieło, które wychodzi poza ramy filmu i przejdzie do historii kina.

The Culture Commission of the Jagiellonian University’s PhD Student Association invites you to attend the next edition of the Doctoral Students' Film Club, which will be held in the White Auditorium of the Cinema Under the Rams (Rynek Główny 27) on Thursday April 4th at 5:00 PM. This time, we will watch Jonathan Glazer's film The Zone of Interest.

Admission is free for doctoral students at the Jagiellonian University, although the number of participants is limited. We ask all who are interested in attending the event to send an email to filip.mazurczak@doctoral.uj.edu.pl by Wednesday April 3rd.

In Zone of Interest, British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer takes a closer look at the domestic idyll of Nazi Germany. Rudolf (Christian Friedel), his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), four children, and dog live in a spacious, pedantically clean home with a well-tended garden and greenhouse. They celebrate family means and dream of vacationing in their beloved Italy. On the weekends, they like to go kayaking or walk in the woods with their friends. However, just outside their house they hear unsettling sounds and sometimes screams of despair because Rudolf Höss is the commandant of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. 

The Zone of Interest is a shocking study of the banality of evil in which we are witnesses to neither genocide nor the reality of camp life. Everything that is brutal and from which we want to turn away is outside Rudolf and Hedwig's home, hermetically sealed outside their everyday lives. Their family idyll is only occasionally interrupted by smoke from the nearby camp chimneys. Is it possible to enjoy a sterile paradise in the shadow of other people’s hell in a way that prevents its traces from reaching the conscience and consciousness?

Directed by Jonahtan Glazer, creator of Under the Skin and classic music videos by Massive Attack and Radiohead, the film is a Polish co-production. On the Polish side, it was co-produced by Ewa Puszczyńska, producer of Ida and Cold War. The Zone of Interest is an outstanding, novel re-interpretation of Holocaust cinema. Completely shot in Poland, it was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and received five Oscar nominations (including for Best Picture), winning two (Best International Feature and Best Sound). The score was composed by Mica Levi, while the cinematographer was Oscar nominee Łukasz Żal (Cold War, Ida). This is a deeply shocking work that opens the viewer’s eyes and transcends the boundaries of cinema. It will enter the history of film.
